Carole Guevin
The Three "C's" Communication, Collaboration, Carole
About you
What did you do before the Web?
I raised 3 kids while freelancing as a communication designer.
How did you find the web?
One of the studio I was working with told me that they were looking for
*convivial* authors on the net!!! That intrigue me. A customer which was a
huge telecom corporation had made their 5 years plan and I read where they
were heading :)) and I got a copy of an unpublished essay by an engineer on
*Cyber Business opportunities*.
I was sick and tired of working for traditional communication agencies -
these 3 events made me do the plunge. I encountered the internet about 25
years ago while working with scientific research groups at the University of
Montreal where I was hooked to the U. mainframe with a 760 baud
terminal...working from home! It was like the preparation for the <big>
*jump* and it shaped my vision of what I was expecting the net to become. My
associate and I were just about ready to cut our first album - we sold our
<instruments> and studio, everything, to make ends meet and started our
*web* ad(ventures).
Why are you here?
I wrote my life manifesto at 14. Something around wanting to change the
world - you know - doing something to better it. I intuitively new that I
needed a *platform* - a tool to communicate with the world. When the *net*
became it was instant proof that it was *it* - what I had been waiting for.
I am a visionary and a great believer that communication can educate
everyone around the world to live and build a better life for themselves.
So 65% of my time has been devoted to research - model building (economic) -
and promoting talent in our industry. It is an absolute passion,
determination.
Methods of production
What do you use to create your sites?
Photoshop - DW. I build the interfaces and I have a backend wizzard that
makes sure the code is... ok! He understands very well the *design* portion
and his the one who sets limitations as to what can or cannot be done. We
make a great team!
About the Web
What do you see as the greatest strengths of the web?
It's unifying factor: the *community* is composed from new media
professionals from around the world. Fascinating.
What do you see as the greatest dangers?
To be honest - I haven't got a clue. Some will say big corps wanting to
dominate it - I say NO WAY - they can't cause they can't control
*individuals*... I think that even the recent dotbombing ripple is
generating a good shake out whereas the real players are rooting themselves
and finding ample place to grow. Evil doers - you know - will always find a
way to do evil...
What would you say to folks who want to work the web?
NEVER give up no matter what the adversities! This is a fabulous moment to
be alive and pioneering the future is the sum of everyone contributing at
its level of understanding and expertise. The web is yet to come!
